Summary
The Arkenian Republic and the Arkenian species are not originally native to Andromeda; they were settled there thousands of years ago by the Progenitor. After several millennia and a final civil war, which saw the fall of the Arkenian Empire and the destruction of their home planet's surface by fusion bombs, the Arkenian Republic emerged from a dark period. With initial support from the Prenn, the Republic has existed in its current form for several centuries.
The industrious and progressive Arkenians have achieved a kind of technological leadership in this part of the galaxy during this time. This success is largely due to three major “corporations” that emerged from the three great imperial factions of the old Empire after the civil war: Polaris Megacorps (PM; mining, mechanical engineering, industry, archaeology, remote sensing), Arkenian Research Company (ARC; high technology, research), and Helios Group (HG; entertainment, gambling, information, espionage).
Current Situation
By the game's timeline, there is a rather sporty competition between the Arkenian Republic and the Prenn Federation to colonize the as-yet-unexplored systems between their spheres of influence as part of the DESC's Deep Space Colonization Plan.
On the horizon, however, a conflict between the Zirax and the Kriel looms. The Arkenian Republic has so far managed to maintain a neutral stance, despite strained relations with the Zirax Empire. In recent years, diplomats have succeeded in establishing contacts with the xenophobic Kriel. These efforts have been so successful that some Kriel, with their nearly indestructible constitution, are now serving as members of the exploration crews on the Ilmarinen class ships for the Polaris Megacorps.
Internal Affairs
Although the unity of the government and the three megacorps in the Tri-City on Arkenia Prime is often celebrated publicly, there are some rumors and allegations of covered-up problems:
- Polaris Megacorps has lost one of its new ultra-long-range explorers. The mission was classified as ultra-secret.
- The ARC laboratories have made incredible progress in recent months, which external experts cannot explain.
- Communication with some distant deep-space listening posts of the Helios Group has been lost.
