Summary
The Karana are an ancient species that, like the Kriel and Tresari, descended from insectoid ancestors. Unlike the Kriel, the Karana do not possess a hive mind but are individuals similar to humanoids.
Their home world is located far outside all significant trade routes in the halo of the galaxy. The Karana live there in extreme seclusion. However, travelers and traders are both welcomed and desired visitors in Karana space.
The organizational structure of the Karana is based on a theocracy-like government, with a polytheism so complex that it is often incomprehensible to outsiders. Reports from diplomatic circles suggest that invoking the appropriate deities before any discussion can take considerable time and is a fixed ceremonial rule before negotiations can commence.
Current Situation
It is speculated that the Karana were in active contact with the mysterious Progenitors during their long civilizational heyday and owe some of their still often superior technology to this legacy. The Karana are known throughout the galaxy as masters of teleportation and portal technology, which is why the government maintains few ships and no military or civilian fleets.
All necessary forms of person and goods movement are handled through sometimes gigantic teleportation hubs. Notably, all such operations, as with other activities, are always managed by highly qualified technicians, as the use of AI is rare and permitted only in very specific exceptional cases within Karana space.
Internal Affairs
Although it is unclear what led to the ban on AI, which is nearly omnipresent in installations throughout the rest of the galaxy, it is conceivable that some of the archeologically significant finds of ancient star gates were demonstrably created in Karana technoworkshops.
However, there is little information from the Karana themselves, and the facts regarding a period 4,000-6,000 years ago remain highly speculative and uncertain. The Karana show inexplicable disinterest in their history from this time.
Only the term Sy’Reem frequently appears in oral traditions, which often leads present Karana Elders into a kind of sustained mourning song.
